Reviews/Summary
————————————————– —————————-
Meticulously crafted but also ponderous and predictable, James Cameron’s 1989 deep-sea epic confirms one of cinema’s oldest first principles: everything moves much more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, formerly married petroleum engineers who still have some “problems” to solve, are called to help a Navy SEAL (Michael Bean) with a top-secret recovery operation: a nuclear submarine has been ambushed and sunk under mysterious circumstances in one of the deepest the waters of the earth, and the petrotechs have the only submersible that can dive that far. Every frame and every performance is extremely sharp and detailed (the computerized aquatic creatures are wonderful), but the film’s clumsy pacing is ultimately fatal. It’s the audience that ends up feeling drenched. For someone who likes guns as much as Cameron (his next film was, after all, the masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it’s interesting that the moral balance here is heavily in favor of skilled engineers; military types are amoralists who justify the end and the means, just like the weak government bureaucrats in Aliens.

This is the only true widescreen anamorphic version of The Abyss everwas released, literally all other regional versions were cut with black bars and therefore very low resolution, even other regionalversions had parts of the movie that add more 28 minutes to the movie.
This re-encoded version is completely uncut and is true widescreen for the first time.
This was personally coded by me, Carjacker from the =Uncut Special Edition= DVD.
