We are in 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis and the center of an expanding empire. Founded on the principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, the Republic has never allowed a single man to assume absolute control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) puts an end to years of conquest of Gaul. During his conquest, he grew rich and built a murderous army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of men ready to obey his every command. Two members of the Fighting 13, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the series’ central characters.

Vorenus is a dedicated soldier and a family man. Men and Caesar himself respect him. Pullo is a female soldier who drinks a lot. His fierce martial arts and rebellious streak also make him popular. Vorenus and Pullo’s troubled relationship begins when circumstances force them to work together on a mission of great importance to Caesar.

Back in Rome, Casesari’s niece, Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is an extremely ambitious and cunning player among the Roman nobility. With Caesar’s lover, Servilla, we have two women who rival any man in the kingdom for intelligence and ruthlessness. Atia’s son (and future Roman Emperor) Octavianus (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is a supernaturally intelligent teenager who understands Roman politics well.

Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey is consul of Rome with Caesar. The struggle between Caesar and Pompey is primarily a struggle of will and reason. Ultimately, it comes down to swords. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complicated. Caesar needs Brutus and his powerful family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus is a Republican who abhors Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Their father-son relationship is a source of great inner conflict for both of them.

Caesar’s rise to power and its consequences for Rome are the context in which all character conflicts take place. Politics, personal rivalries, friendship and some very Oedipal relationships are skillfully combined with historical facts to tell a unique story of Rome at one of its most turbulent times. Rest assured that I have only scratched the surface here. This sprawling story has many characters and plots that I left for the viewer to discover.
